De vierde plantdag in ons Wij-bos dat deel uitmaakt van Voedselbos Werelds, is wederom een succes geweest. Wij zijn IVN regio Nijmegen, erkentelijk voor het beschikbaar stellen van een aantal bomen voor deze dag. De bomen werden geplant door acht jongeren van New Rootz, een organisatie die zich inzet voor jonge nieuwkomers om hun sociale en culturele participatie te versterken. Deze jongeren kwamen uit Nigeria, Iran, Syrië, Oeganda, Thailand, India en Kenia.
Bij vrijwel iedere boom is iets door de jongeren gezegd. Het Wij-bos, initiatief van Bureau Wijland en Netwerk Kleurrijk Groen, is hiermee weer een stuk kleurrijker geworden als symbool voor de diverse samenleving.
Somuadina uit Nigeria droeg het volgende gedicht voor:
‘Nature is changing, as seeds embed their roots in the ground and grow into trees
Their roots strong, their stalks steady
Preparing for winds that might carry away the fruits
Sunlight that might destroy the soil and evaporate the water
Snow in months so strange that bees are a rare sight
Rains that damage the earth poisoning it with foreign substance
The trees weep in memory of the days when the winds kept the trees cool
The sunlight was the trees food source
In the snow squirrels would huddle in the cracks and crevices of the tree for warmth
And the rain would quench the trees thirst allowing it’s leaves to be a vibrant green color
